According to Julio Huerta, Secretary of the Interior of Puebla, all the deceased were emigrants, some from Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Central America.

Migrants often use vans and buses to travel through Mexico to reach the border with the United States because they are often crowded into unsafe, illegal, or clandestine transport to “fulfill the American dream.”

It is recalled that on February 7, 14 Central American migrants also died in a car accident registered in Nuevo León.

In 2021, a van with migrants on board overturned on a highway near Tuxtla Gutiérrez, killing 56 people in one of the worst accidents of its kind.
