The Dominican Republic “cannot stand any more deceptions, lies, unfulfilled promises,” Martínez said in his speech, in which he committed to carrying out “a true transformation” in social, economic, security, health, education and migration matters in an eventual government.

“A transformation is necessary to put order to the collapse of public services, high prices, crime and high prices,” said Martínez, former president of the Chamber of Deputies and a strong critic of illegal migration.

To do this, “the sum of wills is required,” said the presidential candidate, whom independent polls place in third place ahead of the elections on May 19, behind the current president of the country, Luis Abinader, of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and the former head of state Leonel Fernández, of the People’s Force.

The PLD, which governed the country for 20 years, divided in October 2019 after the former president and then president of the organization, Leonel Fernández (1996-2000, 2004-2008 and 2008-2012), rejected the results of the PLD convention. that formation in which the former Minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo defeated him by a margin of less than 1%.

TEXT OF THE SPEECH

The full text of Abel Martínez’s speech, after being proclaimed, is as follows:

President of the Party and Former President of the Republic Danilo Medina Sánchez.

General Secretary of the PLD Charlie Mariotti Tapia

To my life partner Nahiony Reyes

To the fellow members of the Political Committee, Central Committee, and Presidents of Intermediate Committees delegated to this assembly.

To the National Electoral Commission in the person of its coordinator, Ruben Jimenez Bichara

To my special and honored guests.

To the delegation of the Central Electoral Board and the media.

A man speaks to you who comes from the people and who, therefore, understands the people. This person grew up in Hato Viejo, Monción, in a rural family, simple, like most of you, Dominicans. Both my mother and father were school teachers and, at the same time, raised livestock and farmed the land. From there, they instilled knowledge, values, love for the country and our deep faith in God.

Thanks to his example, I am a man of work, effort and results; I am an innate servant. That is why when I started in the PLD, listening to Professor Juan Bosch’s vision and the depth of his thought, I understood that personal fulfillment is in the honest path given to society. Since then, I have known that my mission is to serve people.

I am not an intellectual or a businessman; my vocation is the common good. My inspiration is to contribute to transforming people’s lives. Because of this vocation, I studied law, where I could delve deeper into the injustices that afflict us. I have been a university professor, which allowed me to understand that a new country is possible because the new blood has a passion for change. I will give you an account of my 24 years in public service:

– I was an assistant prosecutor in Santo Domingo

– Prosecutor in Santiago, where we modernized justice from the Public Ministry, created the women’s protection department and created Prosecutors’ offices in police departments to guarantee the rights of citizens.

– Deputy for 14 years; always legislating correctly.

– During the last six years, I consecutively was President of the Chamber of Deputies, being the youngest president of the democratic Parliament in the world. We transparently manage more than 30 billion pesos, as reflected in the two audits of two different accounting chambers.

I am a man of my word, handling every penny with neatness, honesty and transparency.
