“The route of the march on May 1 is scheduled to leave at 08:00 and will begin at the Caja del Seguro, where the workers’ unions will mobilize.”
To commemorate International Workers’ Day, this Monday, May 1, the Unitary Front of Workers (FUT) plans to begin the mobilization in Quito at 08:00.
As in previous marches, the workers will meet at the Caja del Seguro on Avenida 10 de Agosto. Bogotá, the capital’s center, will advance along Guayaquil Street and culminate in San Francisco Square.
Marcela Arellana, president of the Confederation of Free Trade Union Organizations (Ceols) and president of the FUT, explained the objectives of the march:
They will vindicate and recognize the mobilization capacity of the workers’ economy; the president expresses that millions of workers daily produce wealth, goods, and public services and wish to pay tribute to them.
They will express the need for a decent job with social protection, fair wages, access to stability and judicial freedom, dignity, and respect.
They will express their rejection of the treaties with the International Monetary Fund and their need to strengthen the productive apparatus to provide quality services.
At the end of the march, the FUT made a symbolic change of command; the presidency will be handed over to the General Union of Workers (UGT), in charge of José Villavicencio. The union center changes its leadership every two years.
