SANTO DOMINGO.-The former Vice President of the Republic, Margarita Cedeño, reacted this Wednesday to the death of more than 30 children at the San Lorenzo de Los Mina Maternal and Child Hospital, calling on the National Health Service (SNS) to carry out an in-depth investigation into what happened.
She stated that it is very likely that health protocols have been breached. “And worst of all, they have broken the hearts of many families.”
Seventy-two newborns died at the San Lorenzo de Los Mina Maternity Hospital in the first three months of this year, representing 15 more deaths than those confirmed in the same period of 2022, according to data provided by the SNS.
The main causes were prematurity, respiratory distress, and infections.
The San Lorenzo de Los Mina Maternity registered 1,949 births between January and March compared to 1,941 in the first three months of 2022, according to statistics released on the center mentioned above’s social networks after the N Investigación Periodística program announced the death of 34 newborns in this children’s hospital in mid-February.
In a first statement, the Maternal, Child, and Adolescent director of the National Health Service (SNS), Martín Ortiz, attributed the deaths to an infectious outbreak.
