The director of the National Health Service (SNS) ordered the suspension of the San Lorenzo de Los Mina Maternal and Child Hospital director, Dr. Leonel Aquino, and Dr. Dafne Sánchez, in charge of Neonatology, after the death of 34 neonatal in February.
The director of the SNS, Mario Lama, suspended the officials to make way for an in-depth investigation into what happened in the neonatal area of the maternity mentioned above in a hospital.
A commission from the Ministry of Public Health, the SNS, and the Dominican Medical Association will investigate.

He expressed his solidarity with the relatives who died in the hospital and guaranteed that efforts are being made so that there are fewer deaths every day and that a better quality of care is received in health centers.
He recalled that 33% of births in the country correspond to Haitian mothers, who often arrive in temperate conditions without prenatal checkups. They contribute to 50% of maternal deaths registered in the Dominican Republic.
