Santo Domingo.- The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, posthumously appointed Eugenio de Jesús Marcano Fondeur as national naturalist of the Dominican Republic.
The presidential provision is contained in Decree No. 522-23 of October 19.
The decree highlights the contributions of Professor Marcano Fondeur as an explorer with in-depth knowledge of the entire national geography, a diligent naturalist, and a vigorous defender of biodiversity and the country’s natural resources.
Furthermore, he highlights his status as the former general and scientific director of the National Museum of Natural History. This institution bears his name, in addition to being the initiator of the reference collections of this museum and promoter of scientific research, education and dissemination through the museographic exhibits of that museum.
The figure of Don Eugenio de Jesús Marcano Fondeur has been the subject of numerous recognitions at the national and international level, among which are honorary doctorates from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) and the Pontifical Catholic University Mother and Teacher (PUCMM). ), Annual Science Prize from the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic, Federico Henríquez y Carvajal Prize from APEC University, and honorary professor from the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU), among others.
President Abinader’s decision takes place on this year’s centenary of the birth of the distinguished maestro Marcano Fondeur.
